Dos and Don’ts for Hiring a Contractor

Choosing the right contractor is an important decision when it comes to any kind of construction or renovation project. Whether you’re attempting a long term project or just workin’ for the weekend, check out the do’s and don’ts below to ensure a smoother process.

Dos:

  1. Do your research: Look for contractors with a good reputation and experience in the type of work you need done. Ask for references and check online reviews and ratings.
  2. Do get multiple bids: Get at least three bids from different contractors so you can compare prices, services, and expertise.
  3. Do ask for licenses and insurance: Make sure the contractor is licensed and insured to protect yourself from liability if anything goes wrong.
  4. Do set a payment schedule: Set a payment schedule that is fair to both parties and stick to it.
  5. Do communicate clearly: Communicate your expectations and needs clearly with the contractor and make sure they understand what you want.

Don’ts:

  1. Don’t choose a contractor based solely on price: The cheapest contractor may not always be the best choice. The old adage still holds true, “You get what you pay for.”
  2. Don’t pay upfront: Avoid paying the full amount upfront. Material deposits are normal, the full amount is not.
  3. Don’t assume anything: Don’t assume the contractor will handle everything. Communicate clearly about who will be responsible for purchasing materials, obtaining permits, and cleaning up after the project is complete.
  4. Don’t forget to get permits: Make sure the contractor obtains all necessary permits and approvals for the project.
  5. Don’t neglect communication: Keep open communication with the contractor throughout the project to address any concerns or changes in a timely manner.
