clark Griswold Christmas lights electrical tips for Christmas

Christmastime is finally here! A lot of Christmas decor requires electricity or batteries, so we’ve compiled a list of electrical tips for Christmas for you and your resident Clark Griswold.

Check Your Lights.

Untangle all those string lights and plug them in. Look for any burnt bulbs, broken bulbs, or frayed wires. Unplug and replace any of these problems before moving on.

Ladder Safety.

Whether it’s a step ladder or an extension ladder, use safety precautions. Pay attention to the warning labels on your ladder and have a buddy hold it steady if you’re high up!

Watch the Weather.

In the south, we can have snow, rain, hail, or tornadoes all in a day. Double check before you start your outside decorating project.

Avoid Outlet Overload.

Too many cords in one source of electricity can pose a fire hazard, even during cold days.

Christmas Tree Safety.

If you’re decorating with an artificial tree, make sure the label reads “fire resistant”. If you’re putting up a real tree, make sure it’s fresh and never dries out. Place any tree you put up at least three feet away from any heat source.

Conserve Costs.

Turn off those electrical decorations while you’re sleeping. Utilize timers for nighttime — your wallet and your neighbors will thank you!

Opt Out of Candles.

While they are pretty, it may be safer to use battery-operated candles! Keep reading for more electrical tips for Christmas.

Make the Switch.

Change your lights to LEDs to reduce your chance of overheating and fire! LEDs give off less heat and use less energy than traditional incandescent lights.

Use Your GCFIs.

Your outdoor lights should be plugged into ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs). This helps protect against short circuits and overloading

Wrap it Up.

We hate to see them go, but taking your decorations down promptly after the holidays will prolong the life of your decor and is safer for your home. Do one more light check for burnt bulbs, broken bulbs, or frayed wires before stowing them away! Here are some ideas of how you can discard that live Christmas tree.
